Introduction

  1. Animated television miniseries “Over the Garden Wall” (110 min)- 10 episodes
  2. Thesis: In the “Over the Garden Wall” universe, their physics is very similar to ours, but some laws are pushed to help create a fantastical and disturbing narrative.

Body Paragraphs

  1. Realistic/Believable Gravity
    1. Woodsman trips and falls over log, hits head and is knocked unconscious; Wirt trips over shoelace and falls, knocking over man in gorilla suit
    2. Potsfield- Greg/Wirt wear ball and chain worn around their ankles while doing manual labor, feel weight while seeing them move (dragged leg); Wirt tries to jump and falls
    3. Greg/Wirt climb and jump off the cemetery wall, felt impact
    4. Greg/Wirt fall and sink into the lake (which “transports” them into the Unknown)

  1. Supernatural Beings
    1. Enoch the pumpkin king- floating limbs, improbable structure/balance; the city of Potsfield with sentient skeletons wearing pumpkin heads
    2. Lorna- floating, possessed by evil spirit. Auntie Whispers takes care of her
    3. Adelaide the Witch- melts in sunlight
    4. Cloud City- child-like and imaginary beings residing on clouds
    5. “The Beast”- the main antagonist. floating, looks like mass of darkness, unclear structure but looks like the beast is made out of corpses

  1. Haunted Forrest and the Unknown realm
    1. Oil- comes from the Edelwood bark, needed to keep the lantern lit. Magical/evil oil
      1. Tortoises covered in this oil
      2. Dog eats oil tortoise and turns into a rabid beast
      3. Auntie Whispers eats these oil tortoises with no side effects
    2. Lantern- keeps the souls of the dead “alive”, but is actually the source of life for The Beast
    3. Trees- Edelwood. Grown from the bodies of people who became lost in the realm 
    4. Animals- all the animals can talk and act like humans
      1. School house full of animals, 1800’s attire
      2. Beatrice the bluebird (cursed, was a human beforehand)
      3. Ferry with dancing and singing frogs, dressed in 1800’s attire
      4. Fred the Horse; “I wanna steal”
Conclusion


  1. Physical laws are slightly altered throughout the miniseries
  2. With much of the physics still feeling believable, the magical/creepy aspects of the universe that do exist are intensified 
    1. Audience’s suspension of disbelief is not broken; audience is readily put into the shoes of the characters
